PLANNING
APPLICATIONS
Planning Permission for Protected Trees
Cambium Tree Care Ltd can prepare and submit planning applications on your behalf for work to trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) or located within a conservation area in Bristol and surrounding authorities.
Applications can be rejected if submitted incorrectly or without sufficient justification. We ensure all documentation is completed accurately, using clear arboricultural reasoning and terminology that local authorities expect.
TREE PRESERVATION ORDERS (TPOs)
A Tree Preservation Order protects specific trees or woodlands from unauthorised work. If a tree is subject to a TPO, formal consent must be granted before:
- Tree felling
- Crown reduction
- Crown lifting
- Major pruning works
Carrying out unauthorised work on a protected tree can result in substantial fines.
We prepare detailed applications that clearly explain:
- The condition of the tree
- The reason for proposed works
- The extent of pruning or removal
- Supporting photographs where required
If consent is granted, we can then carry out the approved tree surgery works or tree removal in accordance with the decision notice.
Conservation Area Notifications
Trees located within conservation areas are also protected. In most cases, the local authority must be given six weeks’ written notice before work can proceed.
This allows the council time to:
- Assess the proposal
- Raise objections
- Apply a new TPO if deemed necessary
We handle the notification process correctly to avoid delays or refusals.
Why Use a Professional to Submit Your Application?
Applications that lack clarity, correct terminology or sufficient justification are often refused.
By instructing a knowledgeable tree care specialist, you ensure:
- Forms are completed correctly
- Pruning specifications follow BS3998 standards
- Work descriptions are technically accurate
- The local authority has the information required to make a decision
Our experience with Bristol and surrounding planning authorities allows us to streamline the process on your behalf.

THINGS YOU MAY NEED TO KNOW...
How do I know if my tree is protected by a TPO?
You can check directly with Bristol City Council, or we can make enquiries on your behalf. During a site visit, we will confirm whether the tree is subject to a Tree Preservation Order or located within a conservation area.
Do I need permission before carrying out tree work?
If a tree is protected by a TPO, formal consent must be granted before any significant pruning or removal takes place. Trees within conservation areas generally require six weeks’ written notice prior to work commencing.
How long does a TPO application take?
Local authorities typically have up to eight weeks to determine a Tree Preservation Order application. Conservation area notifications require a six-week notice period. We will advise you on expected timescales before submission.
What happens if I carry out work without permission?
Unauthorised work to a protected tree can result in substantial fines and potential legal action. It is always advisable to confirm protection status before instructing any tree surgery or removal.
Can you submit the application on my behalf?
What if my application is refused?
If an application is refused, the decision will include reasons. In some cases, revised proposals or additional supporting information may allow for resubmission. We can advise on the most appropriate next steps.
